Musical Theatre NetworkMercury Musical Developments and Oxford Playhouse
are delighted to announce that BEAM2023 will take place on
Thursday 25th & Friday 26th May 2023.

BEAM2023 is the UK’s biggest showcase of new musical theatre. This exhilarating two-day event showcases the most exciting, bold, diverse and high-quality new musicals being created. Selected from an extensive nationwide search, excerpts and songs from 29 shows in development will be presented, alongside a variety of provocative and insightful panel discussions, interactive workshops, and networking opportunities.

As the largest gathering of the UK new musical theatre community, BEAM2023 brings together writers, producers, composers, venues, investors, agents and development partners for two days of inspiring content. To date, over 35 musicals from previous BEAMs have gone on to be fully staged, including new West End arrival Operation Mincemeat. BEAM2023 will celebrate the art form of musical theatre and introduce you to the potential hit shows of tomorrow.

“BEAM is like Cannes – for musicals. The content is astonishing: brilliantly diverse material that
proves musical theatre is alive and well in the UK.” Kate Golledge, director and dramaturg

“BEAM was a game changer for me. Where else could I have seen that many pitches in two
days? That was me done for the next two years of producing.” Jim Zalles, producer

THE IMPACT OF BEAM

“I’m still experiencing the benefits of participating at BEAM two years on. During the event I was approached by (among others) three producers, two directors, three artistic directors and an agent, none of whom had met me or heard my work before. That led to many meetings, networking opportunities, a musical theatre writing residency, rehearsal space support, agent representation (very excitingly) and so much more. The exposure I received at BEAM helped to boost my profile and contributed enormously to my receiving an award from the PRS for Music Foundation Open Fund.”

After our showcase of ‘The Season’ at BEAM 2018 we found ourselves in conversation with several theatres and producers – conversations we could otherwise never have hoped to hold. As a result, two independent producers agreed to collaborate on the show, which will now receive its first production at Royal & Derngate, Northampton, and New Wolsey, Ipswich, in November 2019. We also secured an agent off the back of the event and subsequently won the Stiles & Drewe Mentorship Award 2018 – a monumental injection of energy which we might not have even applied for without the confidence and encouragement we derived from BEAM. It is almost impossible to exaggerate the significance that moment had on our careers. BEAM has inspired much-needed confidence in the potential of our material, and our ability to produce professional, individual work.”

The Stage

"I’ve never felt a buzz quite like it... while new writing of plays thrives in theatres up and down the land, there’s hardly ever been a truly co-ordinated attempt to develop and promote new musicals from the ground up. Until now... What BEAM2016 did was bring writers and supporters of new musicals to the same party – and make them part of a community... It was an inspiring event – and a provocative one. The future of British musicals may well have been born in those two days."
